Did you know there are accommodations to travel most anywhere in a wheelchair? Yes, that means flying, cruising the sea, taking a train along the countryside, and more. Now that travel has resumed, you could take your loved one on the trip of their life.

Traveling with a disability can be stressful and challenging.  It is important to do your research and develop a plan. Here’s a list of wheelchair accommodations in the travel industry:

Air Travel:

  • Wheelchair accessible lavatories
  • Aisle chair
  • Wheelchair assistance both on and off a flight.

The airline offers special assistance to disabled travelers and will take you directly to your gate. You should provide your airline with advanced notice to allow them time to make necessary preparation to make sure your accessibility needs are met. Check out these tips for traveling.

Cruise Ships:

  • Wheelchair-accessible cabins and bathrooms
  • Automatic doors
  • Wheelchair-accessible theaters and restaurants

Train Travel:

  • Bridge plates (a ramp between the train and the station platform)
  • Boarding assistance
  • Wheelchair accessible bathrooms and seating

Bus Travel:

  • Wheelchair lift
  • Ample space for seating

For those traveling on a long distance bus, assistance is generally provided with the boarding and de-boarding, luggage, transfers, and stowage. Avoid delays with your trip by giving the company at least a 48-hour notice.
