With cognitive impairment, devices such as cellphones and laptop computers become difficult to use. A senior might say that they are finding a technology difficult to use rather than admitting a memory issue. However recognizing the underlying issue leads to knowing how to manage a transition away from technology, or at least taking control of the device options.
You may not have to remove the devices all together, but there needs to be some oversight and limitations put on them. You should protect your aging parent from overspending or becoming a victim of an email scam.
Some tips of how to manage electronic devices:
- Deleting apps that are frustrating
- Counseling a senior who may be approached by email fraudsters
- Using remote access programs to help manage their computer
- Setting up “stored value” credit cards to limit spending
- Making sure permission is granted for these actions
- Using “parental controls” on the device to limit when they can be used and for how long
- Installing a tracking app on the phone may be helpful if the senior leaves the house and gets lost
