There are many services available to help our seniors with their chores. Having someone come into their home often provides peace of mind. Not only for your senior, but also for their caregivers. Most seniors prefer to stay in their homes as they grow older – “Aging in Place” Many seniors are able to remain independent in their homes with the help of these services. Many providers offer a full ranges of services. From house cleaning to safety modifications, such as grab bar installation and wheelchair ramp installation. Service providers are background checked, bonded and insured.
Planning ahead
We don’t think about our parents or loved ones growing old and becoming unable to take care of the daily tasks. We just assume they will always be okay. Then life happens; one of your parents gets sick and passes away. The other parent gets remarried and moves away. How do families find the time or services when they know their parents or elderly neighbor needs help raking leaves or shoveling snow? When creating a plan to help your parents who live across the state, get the snow removed or leaves raked this fall and winter, you are going to need some help. Cold weather is a problem for seniors. We’ve pulled together some resources for those times when you can’t get across town, state, or the country to help your loved one.

Free services:
2-1-1: this number was created by the FCC to be a resource for community needs. Call the number, the staff is accommodating and every call is completely confidential. 2-1-1 gets funding from United Way in my area. They are more than emergency services, they can connect you to multiple resources. You can also access information at 211.org, but the site can be a bit confusing. I suggest calling Monday-Friday between 8 am-6 pm.
Catholic Charities: has a senior services division that offers a range of services, including household chore assistance, food and nutrition, and affordable housing assistance. For Spokane, call 509-358-4250 weekdays or check the Catholic Charities USA website.
Jewish Family Services: is a senior support system that provides a connection between older adults and their distant families. For Spokane, you can contact them at (509) 747-7394.
With your senior’s permission, reach out to their neighbors or church groups for help.
